Testing your Google Fiber connection

Google Fiber, now branded GFiber, is an all-fibre service with symmetrical plans and no data caps. In most cities it sells Core 1 Gig, Home 3 Gig and Edge 8 Gig. In a few markets, starting with Des Moines, the entry plan was upgraded to 3 Gig and the middle plan to 5 Gig. GFiber states that latency is typically about 13 ms.

This test detects your provider automatically and measures download, upload, ping, jitter and latency under load against the nearest server on Cloudflare's network. Enter your plan speed under the result to see the percentage you really get.

What result should you expect?

On Core 1 Gig with a gigabit port, expect 900 to 940 Mbps both ways and a ping of around 10 to 15 ms to a nearby server. On 3 Gig or 8 Gig, a single computer needs a 10 Gbps port to show several gigabits; most phones and laptops will show 1 to 2 Gbps at best over Wi-Fi.

Common reasons for slow Google Fiber speeds

  • Multi-gig plan, gigabit device: the test cannot exceed what your port allows. See is gigabit internet worth it.
  • Wi-Fi limits: even Wi-Fi 6E or 7 rarely delivers multi-gig to one device. Compare with a wired test.
  • Mesh extenders: test plugged into the main GFiber router, not through an extender.
  • Upload lower than download: not expected on GFiber. Test over a cable before reporting it.

Before contacting GFiber support

  1. Restart the GFiber router from the app or by unplugging it.
  2. Run wired tests in both directions and note the results.
  3. Check the GFiber app for service notices.
  4. If speeds stay below your plan, check for traffic throttling, then contact support with your saved results.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Fiber symmetrical?

Yes. All GFiber plans advertise the same upload and download speed.

Why can't I get 8 Gbps on Google Fiber 8 Gig?

You need a computer with a 10 Gbps network port, a suitable cable and a fast enough machine. Phones and most laptops cannot reach that speed alone.

What ping should I get on GFiber?

GFiber states that latency is typically about 13 ms. To a nearby test server, 5 to 15 ms over a cable is normal.
