Testing your Sonic connection
Sonic is an independent internet provider founded in 1994 in Santa Rosa, California. It sells symmetrical fibre up to 10 Gbps, with no data caps, in more than 70 cities across California and Texas, and announced its arrival in Los Angeles and Dallas in May 2026. Where fibre has not arrived, some customers are still on Sonic's older DSL service, with much lower speeds.
This test detects your provider automatically and measures download, upload, ping, jitter and latency under load against the nearest server on Cloudflare's network. Enter your plan speed under the result to see the percentage you really get.
Sonic speeds by plan
| Plan | Download | Upload |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber 1 Gig (some areas) | 1,000 Mbps | 1,000 Mbps |
| Fiber 10 Gig | up to 10,000 Mbps | up to 10,000 Mbps |
| DSL (areas without fibre) | varies with line length | much lower than download |
Plans as presented by Sonic in 2026; tiers depend on the address. Speeds are maximum wired speeds. Checked on 31 October 2026; tiers change and vary by address, so confirm on the Sonic website.
What result should you expect?
With a gigabit port, a wired test shows about 940 Mbps in both directions, whatever the plan. To see several gigabits on 10 Gig, you need a computer with a 10 Gbps port, a Cat 6a cable and a router with multi-gig ports. Over Wi-Fi, results depend on the router and the device, not the fibre.

Common reasons for slow Sonic speeds
- 10 Gig plan, gigabit device: the test cannot exceed your port. See is gigabit internet worth it.
- Testing only over Wi-Fi: read fibre slow on Wi-Fi, fast on Ethernet.
- Upload lower than download: not expected on Sonic Fiber. Test over a cable before reporting it.
- Still on DSL: see speed up slow DSL.
Before contacting Sonic support
- Restart the router and the fibre box (ONT).
- Run wired tests in both directions and note the results.
- Check Sonic's network status page before calling.
- If speeds stay below your plan, check for traffic throttling, then contact support with your saved results.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sonic Fiber symmetrical?
Yes. Sonic advertises equal upload and download speeds on its fibre plans, up to 10 Gbps.
Why can't I get 10 Gbps on Sonic?
You need a computer with a 10 Gbps network port, a Cat 6a cable and multi-gig equipment. Phones and most laptops cannot reach that speed alone.
Where is Sonic available?
In more than 70 cities in California and Texas, mainly the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento and the North Bay, with fibre construction under way in Los Angeles and Dallas.
